My name is David and all items on this website have been hand crafted by myself. I have been woodworking for over 40 years and woodturning on the lathe for the last seven years.
All of the woodturned stock in the Woodwork Gallery has been turned from "rescued wood". Trees that friends request I remove from their property and destined for firewood or the landfill are turned into beautiful and useful objects. I freehand turn all of these pieces and do not use a duplicator. Even though I have turned sets of goblets, plates and bowls for friends and family; no two pieces are exactly alike.
I let the wood show me what it is going to be as I am turning. I strive to get the most from the woodgrain frequently leaving knots and cracks in place as they add character and distinctiveness to the individual pieces.
Any piece that will be used for consumption (wine goblets, plates, bowls, etc.) is finished with a natural walnut oil. After use, the piece should be washed with warm, soapy water, hand dried, and coated again with walnut oil. This keeps the wood from drying out and gives the piece years of service.
The creating of handcrafted solid wood cremation urns and boxes has evolved from many requests from my friends and family. The urns and boxes are made from domestic and exotic hardwoods. Depending on the wood desired; they can usually be made to order in six to eight weeks. I have made some with hinged tops including lock and key. Others have fitted lids that may or may not be glued down. I have also turned cremation urns with fitted tops. The cremation urns and boxes are typically finished with either tung oil or polyurethane and polished by hand.
I make the boxes with the traditional box joint joinery method, but will also, sometimes, do what is called a "through dovetail joint". Having experienced the loss of family and friends myself; I craft each piece with great care. I am always aware that the containers will hold the ashes of a loved one.
